How To Adopt

  1. After you Find A Dog, review the description of the dog you are interested in to make sure that the information we have fits with your particular needs and desires. In most cases, the information on the website is current and gives the information that we have about the particular dog. The picture of the dog does not tell the whole story.

  2. Complete the adoption application. Please make sure that you give us as much information about yourself as you can. List all animals currently living with you including other dogs, cats, birds, reptiles and rodents. The application needs to be complete in order to help us determine if the dog you have chosen is a good match for your home.

  3. Once the application is submitted you will usually receive an email letting you know if the dog would be a good match for you and making arrangements for you to meet the dog at one of our weekly adoption events. Sometimes a dog is best shown at the foster home due to his or her personality. We will let you know where the foster home is and arrange a time that works both for you and the foster home.We do require that everyone who will live with the dog to come and meet them. There is a chance we may tell you that the dog you are interested in is not a good match and may suggest another dog.

  4. If, after meeting the dog you decide you would like to adopt him or her, a home visit will be scheduled. Either someone from Smiley Dog Rescue or another affiliated rescue group will call and do the visit. The dog does not come on the home visit. Home visits are required before any dog leaves our program.

  5. If more than one person applies and meets the same dog, all things being equal, we go in the order the applications were received.

  6. Once the home visit has been completed, you will be asked to complete an adoption agreement. Please read the agreement carefully to make sure that you understand what you will be agreeing to.

  7. An adoption fee of $175.00 is requested for all dogs. This fee helps us to provide the necessary medical care and other needs for the dogs while in foster care. All Smiley Dogs are altered, current on shots, microchipped, and to our knowledge, in good health before they are adopted out. We are all volunteers and as such receive no monetary compensation for our work with the dogs. The adoption fee is used to help defray costs in the rescue and care of the dogs.

  8. Congratulations! You are on your way to owning your new dog. We hope that you and your new companion share a life of love and happiness. We welcome any comments you may wish to give us about your dog at any time.
